I am a scholar, lecturer, and independent music manager specializing in music industry/business studies, sound art, and cultural studies. After completing my studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, I moved to the United Kingdom to further develop my career and research in music. With a PhD in Music from Royal Holloway, University of London, my research explores the intersections of music, politics, and cultural transformation, particularly in cross-cultural and post-socialist contexts.My expertise spans academia and industry. I have taught at institutions such as the University of Liverpool, Heidelberg University, and Point Blank Music School. I also serve as Development Editor for Sound and Music in Games Journal, engaging with global scholars and industry professionals.As an independent music manager and promoter, I worked as a promoter, producer, and tour manager with diverse music genres such as classical, jazz, popular, and electronic music; I engage with DIY and underground music scenes in my research, focusing on punk movements and their socio-political significance. My forthcoming monograph, Western Classical Music in Twenty-First Century China: A Dialectical Crescendo (Routledge, 2025), examines the evolving role of Western classical music in China. Additionally, I am co-editing Western Classical Music Culture and Industry in Asia – Borderlands, Displacement, and Cultural Transformation.
Beyond academia, I actively contribute to cross-cultural music and arts projects, fostering collaborations between artists, scholars, and industry professionals.My music business/industry professional experience embraces the major areas surround the main music business sectors including recording industry, live music, publishing and artist management. I acknowledge that music industry is a global terrain closely related to an international cultural and artistic context. Upholding this philosophy, I am keeping a good track in operating and developing my career in this field, and I actively involved in the music industry’s cross-region ecosystem with my diverse music business knowledge and skills. I’ve worked regularly as an advisor and promoter for such music agencies/music labels as Kajimoto Music, IMG Artists, Harrison Parrot, Chinabot, Jazzy Sport and streaming music media company Vialma. I also actively work as a manager and producer for various kind of music events. For example, as the producer, promoter, branding manager, and tour manager for the MJC Trio, a contemporary Argentine Tango band led by the Latin Grammy nominated musician Pablo Jaurena, I successfully sold and organized over 20 gigs and live concerts at various music venues in ten Chinese cities in 2018. With extensive experience managing hundreds of concerts and gigs across China, Germany, and the UK, I have developed strong expertise in event organization, artist management, and operational strategy within the music industry.
I have actively participated in music and theatre performance practices in recent years. In 2022, I had the privilege of serving as a music advisor for the London-based artist Chris Zhongtian Yuan and the Jazz musician Kevin G. Davy’s captivating film work titled “All Trace Is Gone, No Clamour for a Kiss,” showcased at V.O Curations. Furthermore, I am currently serving as a dedicated dramaturg for the highly anticipated virtual reality theatre project "The End of Time" by the choreographer Wang Jing.
